SSNC History

The chronological development of the college reflects its steady academic growth, diversified programmes, and commitment to meeting the evolving educational needs of students. The institution began strengthening its academic base in 1987 with the introduction of foundational undergraduate programmes such as B.Sc. Mathematics, B.Sc. Physics, B.Sc. Computer Science, and B.Com. (General), each designed to provide students with strong conceptual understanding and practical skills. In the early years, the college expanded its science departments with the introduction of B.Sc. Chemistry in 1990 and B.Sc. Microbiology in 1995, both of which contributed significantly to laboratory-oriented learning and scientific research culture on campus.

Simultaneously, management and applied science programmes were introduced, including the B.B.A. in 1994 and the B.C.A. in 1999, catering to the growing demand for business education and computer applications. Alongside science and management disciplines, the Arts stream also grew with the establishment of B.A. Tamil in 1996, fostering linguistic and cultural studies.

The college further diversified with B.A. English introduced in 2002 and expanded in 2015, responding to the increasing relevance of English language and literature in academics and professional fields.

Additional undergraduate programmes such as B.Com. Computer Applications (2009) B.Sc. Hospital Administration (2023) and reflected the college’s effort to offer job-oriented courses aligned with modern industry requirements. Postgraduate education at the college developed steadily, beginning with M.Com. (General) in 1991, which strengthened the Commerce stream.

The introduction of M.C.A. in 1992 marked a major milestone in the field of computer studies at the postgraduate level. Research-focused programmes such as M.Phil. Tamil (1991) and later M.Phil. Commerce (2013) enhanced the institution’s academic reputation and provided students with opportunities in higher research.

In the science departments, postgraduate programmes such as M.Sc. Microbiology (1996), M.Sc. Computer Science (2000), M.Sc. Mathematics (2004), and M.Sc. Chemistry (2004) were introduced, enriching scientific research, analytical learning, and advanced laboratory work.

The Arts department also expanded at the postgraduate level with M.A. Tamil in 2001, promoting literary research and higher studies in Tamil language and culture.The introduction of Ph.D. in Tamil in 2015 marked the institution’s entry into doctoral-level research, strengthening its research ecosystem and encouraging scholarly contributions in regional language studies. Beyond degree programmes, the college also focused on skill-based education through certificate and diploma courses.

The Certificate in Pre-Primary Teacher Training programme supports students aspiring to enter the education sector, while the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technician provides hands-on training essential for healthcare services. Overall, the academic journey of the college demonstrates a balanced development across Arts, Science, Commerce and Management. Each new course was introduced with a vision to provide students with relevant, industry-aligned, and research-driven education.
